No accident. "Cross", "crutch", and "crotch" all have the same
root meaning ("something forked or divided") and the same origin:
Latin "crux". "Cross" took a detour through Irish before reaching
English, which accounts for its un-palatalized form. "Crux" itself
is also used in English in the sense "most important or difficult point".
