I remember when we were studying Beowulf in high
school a short video discussing the history of Old
English.  They showed a Frisian speaker, speaking as
normal and sounding unintelligible to English-speaking
ears.  Then they had the speaker isolate a whole bunch
of words, and they were almost the same as in English,
down to pronunciation.  The point was to show the
movement of the Danes from the Continent to England, I
think.
