Or maybe it's just an email thing. In the German Usenet community, it's
extremely common to use "du" with everyone (except with people who call
you "Sie", who are rare), and this usage extends to email as well, I'd
say. If I email someone in response to a news posting or even a web
page, I'd be inclined to address that person with "du" -- even if I
wouldn't if I met that person face-to-face.
