I believe that was one in a trilogy by Harry Harrison, starting with _West of
Eden_, spoken by a species of sapient, bipedal, half-aquatic dinosaurs (more
or less) who called themselves the Yilane`. It was a fascinatingly different
language--and the novels are worth a read in their own right.
