A Google search shows that "Arkansasan" is far more common than "Arkansawan", but "Arkansan" is 100 times more common than either; www.m-w.com gives [Ar'k&nz@n] as the only pronunciation, but that doesn't mean it is used in Arkansas. The Arkansas River, which flows though both Arkansas and Kansas, is pronounced ['Ark@nsO] in Arkansas, but [Ar'k&nz@s] in Kansas. -- Knowledge studies others / Wisdom is self-known; John Cowan Muscle masters brothers / Self-mastery is bone; jcowan@reutershealth.com Content need never borrow / Ambition wanders blind; www.ccil.org/~cowan Vitality cleaves to the marrow / Leaving death behind. --Tao 33 (Bynner)
