Abstract or iconic characters?
It's a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like the abstract
because it allows the most flexibility. If you decide to go iconic, you
will run into things that you'll have a devil of a time representing. As
Nik Pointed out, Chinese script uses abstract, (originally) iconic, and
phonetic glyphs; you can go ahead and combine, as well. You'll probably
find a style you like after experimenting with lots of different
characters.
