Chomsky's actually better known to "the public" as a polemicist rather than
as a linguist. I had one of his
books along similar lines called "American Power and the new Mandarins",
which was about the Vietnam
war. He was on TV here (UK) a couple of nights back. Looks the same as ever
he did.
