This is like the character named "Major Major Major" in _Catch-22_, whose
father is indeed sadistic. His first day in the Army, he gets an unexpected
promotion -- to major.
The U.S. military did strange things to people whose names didn't fit
the first-name middle-initial last-name mold. Thus: "GUY NONE DUNCAN"
in the Navy, and "FRANK NMI PETERS" (No Middle Initial) in the Army.
There is even a report of an R.B. Jones, who became "R(ONLY) B(ONLY) JONES",
but very quickly thereafter "Ronly Bonly Jones".
