I always thought that sign meant tongue in cheek, winking, good-natured
but
slightly mischievous. Irony rather than sarcasm. Sarcasm by nature
doesn't need to be marked. Isn't it interesting that it comes from
the Greek, meaning "to tear flesh"? "to bite the lips in rage"?
I guess by the time its damage is done, people know it was used.
