How specifically Californian is LOT-THOUGHT merger nowadays, anyway?<<
I'm told by my linguistics professor that the cot-caught merger is a
western thing, not just a California thing (there really aren't many
things distinctly Californian, anyway; us Westerners all sound sort of the
same, west of Texas, anyways). I'm a native Nevadan, and I do have the
cot/caught merger, and I also pronounce "off" and "all" with the same
vowel sound. I practically never hear anyone pronounce cot and caught
differently; granted, I'm neighboring California, but still, I think it's
pretty widespread.
