It was invented, but that's not the reason. The main reasons were a
desire for greater literacy, and a need for easy importing of foreign
terms, especially connected to Buddhism and the like. It is said that
the king invented it completely by himself, which, according to the book
I read, is actually plausible, given his scholarly interests.
