TECH HELP ??

The way around this may be beyond my capabilities, but....

I can read email 2 ways:
1) thru Outlook Express/Internet Explorer-- OK, all the special characters
and even some unicode (if I switch encoding) shows up; though sometimes
there are 2 copies of everything, simple enough to delete. This set-up also
automatically saves my replies; but it doesn't have a "junk mail" option.

2) via MSN.com, click on the "Hotmail" link. (The odd part is, I have an
msn.com address, not a hotmail addr.) It does have a junk mail setting, very
useful...
But special chars/unicode show up like "Ã+" or the like, and even if I
change the encoding it doesn't change anything. Herman Miller's recent Minza
messages, and Ray Brown's Greek material were simply unreadable here. Oddly,
this seems to affect only Conlang mail; stuff in e.g. Cybalist/Ideolengua is
OK... Also, I have to specifically check a box to save replies-- which I
often forget to do.

The two systems don't seem to be in sync-- junk that is filtered by Hotmail
still shows up in Outlook.

Any suggestions on how to make MSN.com/hotmail behave better? I don't find
any links to change basic settings.

Using a different email client is not an option, I fear; I'm stuck with msn
through my good ol' Verizon DSL.
