As for writing names: a system for phonemically precise transcription based on a Chinese-like script is in fact not so difficult. For example, it could imitate fanqie (something like 'street' + 'dike' = 'strike'). BTW, the post-Yin Old Chinese script seems to be 'more phonetical' than what it developed into later on. It appears that only minor additions were needed to make it suitable for transcribing foreign names phonemically. Basilius
