AP = Advanced Placement, a mechanism whereby U.S. secondary school
students can get university credit for a subject by taking an advanced
course during high school and passing a standardized (difficult)
test on the subject. The test scores are 1-5, where 5 will induce
most universities to give actual credit toward graduation, and 4 will
usually allow exemption from the university course but without credit.
(Rule of thumb: European secondary school corresponds to U.S.
secondary school plus the first two years of U.S. university in
terms of content.)
