notation system invented on a drunken bet...
X-Sampa is unambiguous, logical and graceful; far from perfect, but better than most.
Ease of reading at it's utmost.
You might as well say Hangul is essentially a tool to make even the act of writing ones
own name look difficult.
I swore I wasn't going to get into any more flame-wars on CONLANG (the hoarier
among us may remember a few
classics), but that's a misstatement up with which I will not put.
