I have a big ol' book o' herbs. It tells me that rue, _ruta graveolens_,
apparently is edible, though it causes high photosensitivity in the skin,
which may have adverse effects if one's to be out in the sun after eating it
or being in prolonged contact with it. Indeed it can function in
sufficiently large doses as an abortifacient, though a dangerous one, as
overdoses cause violent pains, vomiting, confusion, and convulsive
twitching.
It also comments that a certain herb farmer is known to occasionally use it
in sandwiches.
