Well, in my case, the study of linguistics provided me
with an excellent preparation for entering the field
of speech-language-pathology.

I often view my work as a speech-language therapist
as a form of "practical, applied linguistics". In my work, I use
what is known about how language works in order to help
people overcome problems with their use of language; and at
times, I even help clients to acquire langage per se.
Anyhow, good luck and all the best in whatever field you end
up choosing!
