This is of general interest, so I'll mention it. The American Heritage
Dictionary is online in full at bartleby.com. I find the easiest way
to search it is with Google: enter
ladder "American Heritage"
into Google's search box, and the AHD entry for "ladder" will be first on
the list.
Near the bottom of the page is a reference to "Appendix I", which is a
list of PIE roots, and a hotlink, in this case to the root klei-. Clicking
on that will show other English words derived from this root, both native
words and borrowings.
The contents page for the AHD is at http://www.bartleby.com/61/ .
The index page for the PIE roots is at
http://www.bartleby.com/61/21/L0012100.html .
There are, of course, errors and doubtful points: AHD is not gospel.

"Modus operandi" = "method of operation". American police jargon, made
familiar by television.

Micropayment advocates mistakenly believe that efficient allocation of
resources is the purpose of markets. Efficiency is a byproduct of market
systems, not their goal. The reasons markets work are not because users
have embraced efficiency but because markets are the best place to allow
users to maximize their preferences, and very often their preferences are
not for conservation of cheap resources. --Clay Shirkey
