Ah, sorry, I didn't see this 'fore I sent my reply to your first post.
My ' are more or less vertical*, and while I usually serify my Roman numerals,
the superscript ones we're talking about are so small that serifs would
make 'em illegible.
* Of late, I've been using a private convention where x' with a vertical prime
sign means the first derivative of x, and x` with an ayin-like (ie, curved)
prime sign is x-prime in the sense "another x". It's not like I believe
anybody else'll pick this up, but it appeals to my aforementioned pseudo-tidy
brain.
