Why, really? In pretty many natlangs /j\/ and /c/ are quite stable sounds.
Look at Hungarian (right, Ferko?), Latvian (that even shifts to this
position all palatalized |k| and |g| like in |k,i-mija| ["ci:mija]
"chemistry", |g,eogra-fija| ["j\eo,gra:fija] "geography"), Altai/Oyrot
(where Proto-Turkic /j/ became /j\/ as in /j\o5/ "road")...
