It was because of this effect that the standard spelling of Middle
English changed "un" and "um" and "uf" pretty consistently to "on" and
"om" and "ov"; that is why "some" and "home" don't rhyme, why
"son" and "sun" are pronounced the same, and why "love" has a bogus
"e" at the end (otherwise it would have been read "lou").
