CONCULTURAL NOTE:
In response to floods in South Asia in 2122 CE, the UN and the UNEP (UN
Environmental Programme) sent flood-control engineers and peacekeeping police
from the Netherlands, Gurkhas from Nepal and French Foreign Legionaires to
India [Bharat] - one of the first nations of many nations to be hit worst
(besides Bangladesh and Pakistan).
Besides the many experienced, "battle-hardened" flood-control experts
from the Netherlands, Japan and Italy - who directed and strategized the
"Bharat UN Relief Campaign" - volunteer emergency aid workers and
support-and-supply technicians came from Germany; Russia; China; the United
States (mainly Californians); Mexico; Brazil; Canada; Great Britain; Spain;
Israel; Egypt; Saudi Arabia; Australia; New Zealand and the Maori Autonomy of
Aotearoa; Polynesia Libre; Indonesia; Brunei and Azania (New South Africa).
They all quickly learned both new terraforming tactics and the "Restricted
Englishes" or ESP ("Englishes for Specific/Special Purposes") called
_EmergencySpeak_ and _PoliceSpeak_. By late 2123, an estimated 3 million
volunteers and 125,000 rescue and police dogs had descended on India. Amongst
these volunteers were the true pioneers of terraforming.
Meanwhile UNESCO technicians worked on saving "World Heritage Treasures"
- invaluable cultural resources and artifacts - and a massive effort to
rapidly relocate the Bibliotheca Alexandrina of Alexandria, Egypt before
flooding in Egypt drowned the library.
The Campaign was headquartered in Varanasi (formerly Benares), in north
central India, on the Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh State. [One of India's
oldest cities, Varanasi is the holiest city of the Hindus. The city is also
sacred to Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs. (The city is also home headquarters to
a nationally known and respected "semi-unorthodox, renegade" Franciscan order
notorious for wearing saffron robes instead of brown habits,"Hindu-izing
Christian ideas," and generally carrying on like _sadhu_, "holy men"). Being
a cultural centre, it is additionally home to the Benares Hindu and Sanskrit
Universities and to the new location of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.]
During 2123-2136, a rapid succession of polar ice melts triggered by both
Global Warming trends and a wave of global volcanic activity, extreme
flooding of coastal areas world-wide occurred - drastically raising the sea
level approximately 150-175 metres above "normal" level. Not only did
millions lose their lives to the flooding, volcanic activity, tsunamis or
landslides, massive refugee exoduses - accompanied by famines and pandemics -
created severe socio-economic upheavals and regional armed conflicts.
Governments fell and whole countries were torn apart and devastated in the
Global Refugee Wars - outright genocidal warfare and use of tactical nuclear
devices by some countries made a bad situation even worse. Not only
civilization but all ideas of humanity itself and human existence seemed
quite threatened.
The UN Bharat Relief Campaign fell apart in the wake of this increasingly
_global_ disaster. By late 2137, most of the Campaigners, who had the means,
left for what remained of their countries, families and homes. Quite a few
commited suicide.
Still others - 410,617 according to 2138 census and citizenship data -
settled in various parts of "unflooded" India - "either by defiant heroic
choice or by utterly mind-numbed dire circumstance - or both" as one Indian
English-language reporter wrote.
In 2139, Asoka, a newly created suburban area of Varanasi was given to a
626 member UNESCO group [a group predominately Dutch, Italian, Japanese,
South African, French Polynesian, and Californian] as "Eternal Thanks from
the People of Bharat" by the Indian government after popular grass-root
demands were vigourously voiced by grateful Indian citizens of all walks of
life.
The 193 children of these Campaigners and some of their Indian
schoolmates (as well as some of their CyberSpace friends from around the
world) created their own language. Distinct from their parents' many
different languages, the expanded English creole called "CampaignSpeak" they
grew up with and that of the Indian languages, it started as semi-secretive,
slangy, polyglot-lexifier code-language that rather rapidly became a pidgin
...
Beginning in 2168 CE - as the first years of the New Ice Age began, it is
_their_ children (and their Indian and CyberSpace friends) who - with the
"non-authoritarian assistance and eagerly curious encouragement" of their
much beloved, iconoclastic Montessori school teacher Sri Guru Brother Paolo
Krishnamurti Mezzofanti Buzzi-Dass - created the mesolect creole form called
_g0miileg0_, the "lingua franca" - besides Wurld Inglis, Mandarin and Spanish
- that was to be eventually taken to the stars by the Jaganatium-Drive
