Or even just dialects. For instance, the word for "black" in Standard Watakass=ED is _dyadtyu'a_ (/djadZua/). This comes from a dialect where the old /dj/ became /dZ/, thus Old Watakass=ED _dihadihu'qa_ (diha- =3D color of, dihu'qa =3D ash) became /dZa'dZua/, or _dtyadtyu'a_, as it woul= d be transcribed, but the association with the (non-productive) prefix dya- (color) turned the first /dZ/ into /dj/. Had that original word survived into Standard Watakass=ED, it would be _dyadyu'a_ (/djadjua/), i= n fact, _dyu'a_ is the word for "by-product or side-effect", descended from _dihu'qa_, but with a semantic extension, from by-product of fire to any by-product. --=20 Happy that Nation, - fortunate that age, whose history is not diverting -- Benjamin Franklin http://members.tripod.com/~Nik_Taylor/X-Files/ http://members.tripod.com/~Nik_Taylor/Books.html ICQ #: 18656696 AIM screen-name: NikTailor
