It's not the [E@] / [e@] sound itself which sounds strange to me, it
sounds strange used in the word "Passover"....probably because it's a
very English-language sound put onto a Jewish holiday. Pesach is
pronounced (depending on the accent) ['pesax] or ['pesaH], just in case
it sounded weird to you because of using a [tS] sound for the {ch}.
