"Proposed but not officially approved for voiced pharyngeal fricative
(standard IPA /?\/)

Comments: The character ... is visually suggestive of Arabic
character for the Arabic character for the sound <3> 'ain."

Wait a moment...

The book says it's a pharyngeal fricative...isn't what you described
earlier (choking sound, etc) the epiglottal stop?
