I agree; nobody needs defending from anyone, because there was no attack.
Just a correction of terminology in an article submitted to the list for
review.
Also, I think there's a distinction to be made between the types of
correction under discussion Failure to use the "proper" term because you
don't know it is no crime. But misusing technical terms because you don't
understand them has the potential to confuse others. I'd much rather read
an article that talks about "sounds-going-togetherness rules" than one that
refers to phonotactics as "morphology".
And being able to remember such things "stupidity". It's just a case of
different people's brains working different ways. Some people seem to be
bottomless repositories of knowledge - useful or otherwise - while others
don't sweat the details. Remember: even Lois Lane - ace investigative
reporter, gifted writer, and the woman who won Superman's heart - can't
spell worth a damn. She may be fictional but she's not atypical.
