As has been said, it's encoded in UTF-8. What you saw when you chose unicode
was probably right: boxes indicate required characters missing from the font
that you're using, which is common enough these days, especially considering
I was using some ugly things like _t_ with an under-comma. I had some boxes
too (though only in mozilla's display, not in the xterm I used to compose the
message - they use different unicode fonts_
