I used to have dreams on a regular basis where I was writing the perfect OMG
story, the story to end all stories, only to lose a grip on it when I woke up.
Then one morning I actually remembered the story on waking and in a fitful haze
I wrote it down lest I forget it again. It was the most godawful tripe I'd ever
read, and I haven't had a dream like that since. :D

So, yes, things that seem so great in rumination can manifest on paper as half-digested. ;)
