Yep, I believe it was the labial approximant [w].
My Greek professor once joked about how the original root for "eipon" (to
speak) had a digamma "Fep-" (F=digamma). This is the same root for the
English word "epic". He said it's a good thing the digamma dropped out;
because otherwise we'd pronounce "epic" as "wepic", and a "wepic" just
doesn't sound as impressive as an "epic". :-)
