Well, of my particular Zhang/Chang/Cheng/Chong/Chan family... We are
actually one of oodles of different families with similarly Romanized
surnames but the only way - besides DNA testing ;) - we can be sure who is
possibly related to _our_ particular clan is by actually seeing the family
name written (or even going as far as "politely demanding" to see _their_
family scrolls).
The particular character for my family name has connotations of
_Ever-ready_ - sorta like an "advertising surname" for my wiley
"semi-civilized" ancestors. The earliest Zhangs probably were "mercenaries"
or _yu-hsia_ {"wandering-force"} during the Warring States Period (475-221
BCE).).
In this day, my father insists it is better to be a freelancer than to be
a "corporate dog." The Family ideals are still alive...& kickin' ass...
