I don't know about German, but its Dutch cognate "mens" is neuter and AFAIK
the pronoun associated to it is always the neuter pronoun "het". In my
mind, it's because "mens" refers to "a human being" without reference to
the sex of that person, and that when it is used to refer to a single
specific person, it is done on purpose in order *not* to specify the sex of
that person. So using a gendered pronoun would kind of defeat that purpose
;))) .
