One column is labeled "Codex Letters" and the other "Gotland
Runes." I will assume (and we all know what that means) that
the Gotland runes are for carving into wood or stone, while the
codex letters are for writing on some paper-like substrate.
I would also guess that the codex letters will eventually develop
rounded corners from repeated writing.
