So I was wrong thinking that it was programmers who made the world
illiterate... they only provided a successful continuation to what
telegraphists did... ;)
However, it seems less common in the other Western languages to drop
foreign diacritics. E. g. German newspapers seem to retain acutes,
graves, and even haceks. Somehow cope with that.
