Yes. In Livagia the inland farming communities are patrilocal and
patrilineal and form the basis of the bourgeoisie, while the
coastal fishing communities are matrilineal (and with a weaker
form of marriage) and form the basis of the proletariat. In the
city (a port) the two classes coexist.
I 'discovered' these facts about Livagian society through thinking
about kinship systems in the abstract. But I now perceive that the
Livagian situation obtains also in many of the societies we live
in -- that is, marriage is more fluid in the proletarian sector
of society, domestic units are built around a matrilineally related
clan, and property inheritance is a nonissue.
