The local pronunciation has been [b@:m@] for a very long time. It's just
the spelling that varies, or perhaps one shoud say that usage has shifted
from (Victorian) transcription to transliteration.
Cf. Tibet, which locally is written {bod} and pronounced [\ph%:] (at least
in Hlasa, part of central Tibet will have [\ph%?] and the periphery will
have [pot] and everything between that and [\ph%:] depending on local dialect.
