The tone diacritics are, and I think they go above the main component of the diphthong -- i.e. over the /a/ in both /aj/ and /ja/. However, the independent tone symbols (those which can be arbitrarily concatenated, and which are full h-height glyphs in their own right) are a different story. I *think* they come either after the vowel, or at the end of the syllable. It's times like this that I wish I had a copy of Pullum to hand... Paul
