Thanks (& Sally too).  How about the pronunciation of "u"; sounds like
it's already [I] ~ [i] depending on dialect.  When
did the change [y] > [i] occur?  (It must have, because otherwise
there would not have been a "y"/"u" orthographic distinction.)
