There's two series of elements here; the pronominal adjectives "my, her,
their" etc., and the actual possessive pronouns "mine, hers, theirs" etc.
They work complementarily:
This is Jane's cat (adjective)
This is her cat
*This is hers cat
This cat is Jane's (pronoun)
*This cat is her
This cat is hers
*Muke!
