I don't think there *is* a Western viewpoint here. At any rate, Swedish doesn't have a good single-word translation of "scientist"; the closest is _vetenskapsman_ (or in these gender-aware days, sometimes a _vetenskapare_), but that tends to be more inclusive. It's, to the knowledge of this native speaker, never used to refer only to those dealing with the "hard" sciences, like the English word often is. You can say _naturvetenskapsman_ "natural scientist", but that's strictly someone working with the physical sciences - a distinction of subject matter, not methodology or "objectivity" (for lack of a better word).
