Actually, there are three books in that series --
_Becoming Alien_, _Being Alien_ and _Human to Human_
and they were written by Rebecca Orr not Ben Bova.
They were published as part of the "Ben Bova Presents"
series by new authors.
The race in question is called the Gwyng (sp?) and
they were one of the more interesting alien races I've
seen in sci-fi. Sadly, that series, while including a
linguist as a character (Tom Red-clay's
girlfriend/wife) it had verrrrry little to say
linguistically. Culturally, it was fascinating
though.
