What was written |ea|, was pronounced [&@]* and later merged with /e/.
What was written |éa|, was pronounced [&:@]* and later merged with /&:/.
*Some scholars, notably Elmer H. Antonsen think that
|ea| was /V(:)/, |eo| was /7(:)/ and |io| or |ie| was /M(:)/.
I have not yet examined his arguments in any depth,
so I haven't decided what I think.
(Is this developping into our first OEPT? ;-)
