Highlights of the Beeb serial have to be the Gimli and Gollum characters -
especially Gollum, played by Peter Woodthorpe, though Ian Holm's Frodo is
not as good as his Bilbo in the film IMHO. Bearing in mind the limitations
of the medium it was pretty darn good, despite the presence of trainee
Gestapo officers in Mordor (shades of "Ve haf vays of making you talk...").
I was kind of involved with the serial as the editor of Quettar (the
Official T.S.'s linguistic joirnal) at the time. A book was produced to
follow on from the serial and I had some artwork and a piece on linguistics
in it. It was called "Microphones in Middle-Earth".
