It's not just another free email; it's a new way of getting at your
saved email. Instead of having to remember what folder you filed
something into, you can search your saved messages using the Google
engine - very powerful, and something I've wanted for a long time. I
played with writing a mail user agent that stored messages in a
database, but it was too slow to be usable at the time.
I'm a mail packrat, with a copy of every message sent or received since
1999, and still only have about half a gig of mail, so the extra storage
doesn't mean as much to me.
