10,000 km was intended to be the distance from the North Pole to the Equator,
but some errors were made in the original survey, and by the time the errors
were found it was too late to change the meter's definition.
Likewise, 1 cubic meter of water was intended to have a mass of 1000 kg, but
again there were errors.
