Distances and direction

Then there is the old distance from Rome, or like.
The further you are away from the Eternal City the less you were
attitude of many Romans.
I do like the old Roman way, which comes down to us for Miles, namely
that a mile was like 2000 paces of a Roman Legionaire. The paces
has changed some, but the basic meaning is still there. While metrics
what does a Kilometer mean other than 1000 meters? Napoleon and like? Or
was it based on some supposed idea of old Cubits or like?
