Linguistics as a science needs mathematics to process information.
Computational linguistics is a very useful branch of linguistics that's
completely math dependent. On the other hand, linguistics is like
biology, not like physics; a lot will come down to observation and
things being the way they are because they are, not coming down to one
grand set of formulas.
