The U.S. has a similar system. The first five numbers change from post
office to post office usually (in smaller towns, there is one P.O. and zip
code per town, while I have heard in new york city sometimes a single
high-rise office building has its own number). The first two numbers change
state-to-state. For example 11- is for NY and 90- (I think) for California.
The other three of the first six and the four from the optional specifyer
section: I have no idea how they devise that.
A U.S. ZIP (postal) code looks like this: 12345-6789 (most people leave out
the last four after the dash).
