Conlangs based on proto-languages

I've mentioned this before, as have others. My question is not merely about
conlangs based on proto-languages such as Indo-European or Sino-Tibetan, but
also what would the linguistic scene be many thousands of years ago, back in
the days of Babel and Nimrod if you're going from a biblical perspective.
So this pertains to a conculture as well as a conlang.
This connects to Techian legends on the origin of man, the origin of race
and the origin of language. One such legend claims that Tech and the
Techian nation came from Nimrod, the first emperor who conquered Mesopotamia
built the Tower of Babel. (According to Genesis, Nimrod came from Cush, the
old name of Ethiopia and ultimately Africa -- but Cush may actually be the
Kassites of lower Mesopotamia.)
So a later part of my RPG project may deal with the ancient world where
mankind begins to divide into races, nations, languages and cultures.
Anyone ever done something like this?
