This is not very comfortable though I think. You might want to have a
look at Fontforge¹, which is what I use for font editing. That, plus a
vector graphics program of your choice, since drawing in there and
importing things into Fontforge afterwards seems easier to me than
drawing things directly in Fontforge.

¹) http://fontforge.sourceforge.net, or, if you're on Ubuntu, call _sudo
aptitude install fontforge_ in a terminal. That isn't the most recent
version however, as usual.
