As far as I know, whether a verb is -ar, -er, or -ir is idiosyncratic. If Latin did have a pattern to the conjugations (which I'd never heard of), then some trace of that would presumably remain in Spanish, but most borrowings are automatically assigned to -ar. -- "[H]e axed after eggys: And the goode wyf answerde, that she coude not speke no Frenshe ...
